Vigo is a city in Galicia found on the Ría or submerged valley of the same name. Until the 20th century it was a sleepy village with an insignificant population that gradually increased as economic activity increased.

Parque de Castro

Vigo's oasis of calm is the Parque de Castro located in the center of the city. The park is at the top of a hill and from there you can get a wonderful view of the city and the Bay of Vigo. The ruins of a fort called 'San Sebastian' can also be seen while a large stone cross is found in the center of the park. Most tourists prefer the wonderful views from the park while others prefer to just sit down on the stone benches and enjoy the peace and quiet among the trees and shrubs.

La Guía Park

This park is found just outside the city of Vigo in the little town called Teis. Its most notable feature is the church of La Guía that is built in the center of the park. Its tall spire soars above the surroundings and can be seen from Vigo proper. The view from the park is even more breathtaking because you can obtain fabulous vistas of the blue waters of the bay with the red roofs of the houses on the other side. On a busy day at the port you will be fascinated by the numerous ships that enter and leave, bringing tourists or locals to and from the town.

The Old Town

The old quarter of Vigo is definitely one place that you should visit. In the center of the old town is the Iglesia Concatedral de Santa María or the Church of Saint Mary. It is the oldest church in Vigo and the streets all radiate from this epicenter. Four squares have survived the years with the biggest of these called the Plaza Constitución. You can stroll around these squares among the narrow streets that go back over 400 years and feel the same old world atmosphere that prevailed here during that time.

The Marina

Right next to the old part of the town is the marina. Anchored there, floating serenely on the blue waters of Vigo Bay, are all kinds of craft that come in varied shapes and colors. You can see not only pleasure craft but also the more solid, practical shapes and colors of the many fishing vessels that form part of Vigo's fishing industry. These same craft bring in the catch that supplies the restaurants and eating places catering to tourists.
